Critical Review

1 For my project I have created a single ‘pilot’ episode   for a mini sitcom style  web series called ‘Common Room’. It introduces five university aged  students with different ,ethnic, social and economic backgrounds who live in  the same accommodation. The films follows how they learn to put their  differences aside to be friends. 2 I began with the intention of producing a series so I explored how different   mediums present series. I looked at TV and mini web series to understand  the standard I should be aiming towards for my own project. However since,  I was keen on looking at comedy I wanted to visit other series like Hogarth’s  paintings and children’s book series so that the humour in my project was as  inclusive as possible. 3 I originally had written my proposal with the intention of making five one   minute long micro short films that look at the same event from the  perspectives of different characters. Very early on

FMP Week 3

Before my crit with Laura this week I had been watching 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and the BBC Three series 'Some Girls'. Both of them had one thing in common. Scenes that were extremely chaotic and I had decided that my objective for this week was to look into this more circus like style. Crit with Laura In my crit with Laura we decided to set some targets for the week before we break up for Easter. She recommended I look into Mike Leigh and the Royle Family if I wanted to emulate a farcical dynamic. We talked about how the charm behind having very chaotic moments on screen is being able to one poignant/moving moment that catches the audience off guard in the middle of all the chaos and that my task would be to find an intimate moment between the characters. I also continued looking into different comedy styles. -Friends Romantic situations video essays -Dramedies, dark humour, Grandma's house, Fleabag (Video essays about British humour vs American h

FMP Week 2

Crit with Alys  The first day back we began with a preliminary crit just to get a sense of what our ideas are and what we should consider doing next. I explained by new idea that was a situational comedy style web series that was based on my own friendship group. When discussing research I explained that I had been watching Bollywood films about friendship, Alys suggested that it might be worth making a key theme in my series my ethnicity. She suggested that my own unique perspective could be that of a British Indian female and that I should use my project as a chance to subvert any antiquated stereotypes about my culture, such as pressure from parents, misconceptions about arranged marriages and differences in cuisine etc. She also pointed out that whilst drawing inspiration from my own friend group is a good idea I should be weary not to alienate my audience and that humour is subjective and I need to make it as inclusive and universal as possible. To do this she suggested I look i

FMP Week 1

My Proposal + Initial Research  My intention for the FMP is to produce a series that explores the feeling of community and shared experiences. When I originally had written my proposal I was interested in producing a series of micro shorts that portrayed one event from several perspectives. I was inspired by a short film idea I had earlier in the year about trying to get a seat on the Jubilee line to North Greenwich only for the whole carriage to become empty at Canary Wharf which is the penultimate station. This was originally supposed a short comedy film with no dialogue and a simple set up and pay off but after Tom spoke to us about trying to avoid making something that is clichéd and without depth, As a result I thought perhaps trying to make my story more interesting my making it a series.  The original story featured the following characters A film student carrying lot's of heavy film equipment therefore needing a seat A pregnant woman who is entitled to a a priority or

Easter Holidays + FMP Week 4

Image
Easter Holidays I was set the target of having finalised my casting and having shot something by the end of the easter holidays. I didn't end up doing this as it ended up taking me three weeks of experimenting with different story ideas before I was content with the format I wanted to present my FMP. So that when term started I could hit the ground running and make progress Continuing with the idea of the heroin/insulin misconception concept from last week I  thought about different structures I could use to tell that story. Short Film Idea A potential idea for a short film with this premise I had was for a foreign exchange student to be visiting a local British family and to have fainted from her blood glucose dropping at a house party. This stems from a miscommunication due to the language barrier but the same mistaking the medicine for illegal drugs stands. The film wold follow how the host student has to face the consequences of a foreigner falling unconscious under her
