Film Week 1

Image
We started the week by watching a series of short films and identifying what made a good story. This week we learnt about the idea of set up and pay off. The idea being that you build up the audiences expectations before subverting them as the pay off. We then learn more about character and flaws. We explored the idea that a story should contain 2 opposing forces and that the protagonist should have a flaw that stops them from obtaining what they want util the opposing force wears them down to the point where the protagonist is forced to change their ways. This week we also started planning how were gonna shoot our film. Similar to the animation project we generated 10 ideas of our own before selecting one as a group. We finalised an idea about a clown. link to script https://docs.google.com/a/students.rave.ac.uk/document/d/1wQD0NP0HXYfdBGdtVrmQG7gfcz4opBRmZPSNSQ1At_c/edit?usp=sharing

Life Drawing

Image
Today all of Group 2, had a life drawing session. I was particularly nervous about this as I have never considered myself to be someone who can draw. Our tutor this week was really helpful in showing me that drawing is less a talent that you need to be born with to be able to do and more a technical skill that can be practiced.  My confidence grew through the day as we used a series of different techniques and materials such as charcoal and continuous line. This activity has taught me that if I continue to practice my drawing I will become better at it and that I don''t need to be so shy about drawing. For this reason this experience has been invaluable tome

Animation project evaluation

We produced a 1 minute long stop motion following the story of a pair of shoes who lost their partner shoe. To begin with we started by writing out our story in a group and identifying who our main character was and what the object of their desires was. in our case it was the matching shoe. We then had to pitch our ideas to the group. After this we had to come up with a storyboard and moodpboard for our animation. Making a moodpboard is a useful way of comping research we did ours as a collage of images found on the internet and pictures of props that we already had and wanted to use. I think on my next project I would like to spend more time on the mood board as it’s a very good way of visually laying out ideas and I was surprised to see the kinds of connections you are able to make when things are laid out in front of you. For example in our mood board we had a picture of a puddle but weren’t sure where we would be able to find a similar setting we could shoot in. After searching

Animation week 1

We began animation by watching a series of different animations and beginning to consider how characters and stories are structured. Our first activity played around with the idea of metamorphosis, the idea that our character has to go through some sort of change by the end of the story for it to be successful successful story. We had to produce a GIF that shows this. We had half an hour to do this on paper so we drew a series of pictures and assembled them on an app that produces a GIF. Since we only had half an hour to decide on an idea and execute it it wasn't as well executed as we had hoped. Our showed a cactus with a moustache and once it rains it's spires fell off along with it's moustache. Unfortunately as the wire for my hard drive has broken I am not able to upload it. We then did an exercise thinking about story world emphasising the idea that in animation you can create anything and it is up to you to create. Our group created a short stop motion using our p

Photography Project Evaluation

After being introduced to a number of street photographers last week I was particularly interested in using street photography in my project. I thought since the streets are our everyday surroundings it made sense to use them as a way of presenting our memories. The story behind my photos is that once I walked through Piccadilly listening to soundtrack of the grand Budapest hotel and now as a result I am reminded by the film whenever I walk through the street. I found places and objects in the street that reflect key themes and motifs in the film. After taking the photos I edited them on Lightroom. I took each picture in portrait as the film the Grand Budapest Hotel has varying aspect ratios and I thought this would be an interesting thing to explore in my photos. My main research consisted of looking at reference images from the film; however I also looked at the work of Matt Stuart as his street photography is humorous and uses a lot of vibrant colour as well being set around the st

Photography: Gallery Visits +Intro to street photography and Lightroom (letter to my future self)

Over the course of our photography project we have visited 3 photography exhibitions. The Burberry exhibition in Farringdon,The photographers gallery and ABP (association of black photographers)-Autograph. I found the latter particularly useful as the exhibition at the photographers gallery related strongly with the theme of memories which helped as research for my own project and the exhibition  at ABP helped me generate idea relating to dissent.

Introduction to photography +;lighting workshop

We began photography by being sent off to the library to find three images that we invoked a memory in us. This was to help us begin to understand the process of research and how it was important to go looking for inspiration. After we had found the images we then had to present them to the whole class and explain what significant they had for us. I photocopied the cover the 'Polar Express' DVD, a pictures of some brownies from a cookbook and a picture of a book shelf. I have written an explanation for why I chose each of these pictures in my sketchbook.   After a brief introduction from Othello and Alys about their recent projects we were given a general overview on how to use the settings on our cameras before being sent out to try and take some photos. This was particularly useful for me as unlike the majority of my peers I don't know much about photography.  With practice I should hopefully get the hang of understanding how these settings work and how I can use th

Sound Design evaluation

We did this project before I had computer so I have handwritten my evaluation and scanned it in. https://vimeo.com/234218348 (link to my sound project)

Experimenting with sounds

Before we begin our minute long projects we've been encouraged to collect as many sounds as possible and consider how they could be manipulated and used to accompany a visual soundtrack. In our lesson we watched the opening scenes from Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Conversation' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlwdpNw1FW8 and a scene from blade runner and dissected them to understand the difference between diegetic sounds, non diegetic sounds, atmospheric tracks and spot sounds. ( Notes in sketchbook). We picked up on the futuristic sounds featured in both films so Andrew showed us how to manipulate a recording of someone tapping a pen on a table in 'audition' to sound like the futuristic sounds that we hear in the opening scene of 'The Conversation'. We were shown how to use the equaliser and how to reduce the bass and treble depending on the effect we're trying to achieve. In this instance he reduced the bass and showed us a number a preset effec
