Today we went back to the Tate modern,this time to begin researching for our Contextual studies:Exibhtion review essays. I hadn't had a chance to visit the Soul of a Nation exhibition so that is what I decided to have a look at today. The exhibition was curated by Mark Godfrey and Zoe Whiteley and followed and celebrated the work of black artists or artists that have presented members of the African-American community, in their work(e.g Andy Warhol by featuring Mohammad Ali in his work), from the peak of the American civil rights movement in 1963 all the way to 2017. The work presented is combination of paintings, collages,photography,sculpture and fashion. There was also a Spotify playlist curated by Darcus Beese,the president of Island records which we could listen to during the exhibition. We began this week by going to the Tate modern with the objective of beginning to think about our sound projects and the topic of dissent. We then went again on Friday to start preparing for the exhibition review essay that we will have to hand in November. On Monday I looked around all of the free rooms and exhibitions. I took some pictures and made of a note of any pieces that left an impact on me or that I thought could be relevant to the theme of dissent. Particularly for sound design I thought the Babel tower byTh Cieldel Meireles. This was an installation comprised of several radio all tuned to different stations to represent the allegory of babel in the Bible. http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/meireles-babel-t14041  I made a note of the particular rooms and artists that were interesting to me and I noticed I was particularly interested in artists that focussed on cultural identity or issues to do with race. Today we started looking at Sound design and what we'll be doing over the next few weeks. We started off by talking about the importance of sound in films and the different layers that soundtracks are comprised of such as the atmospheric layer and foley and spot sounds. We are working towards creating either a soundtrack for an existing film scene, a photo or a sound journey. We are also not to use any non-diagetic sound. I decided to record inside the lift and then various points around the O2 and outside of the building although I did find a lot of the sounds I recorded sounded quite similar.
